Matcha: Superfood, Trend, or Both?

Posted: Jan 30 2017

Matcha is green tea powder, but it’s a lot more than that; it’s rich with antioxidants and has many health benefits. The difference between matcha and typical green tea is that with regular green tea, you’re extracting the flavor from the leaves, whereas matcha is a powdered form and allows you to ingest 100% of the leaf, meaning you receive 100% of green tea’s health benefits. The powder contains up to 137 times more antioxidants than traditional green tea, and one serving contains the nutritional content of 10 cups of traditional green tea. It has more antioxidants than any of the other superfoods, like goji berries or acai.

Another great thing about matcha is that its flavor pairs very well with chocolate, especially white and dark. It has a sweet, grassy taste that’s complemented by the sweet flavors of many drinks, cakes, chocolates, and cookies. In the store, we have a variety of different matcha products. The Macaron Café macarons that we sell come in a matcha flavor, which is delicious and lets the powder’s true flavor shine through. From Vosges, we have two matcha bars; one is a classic matcha with dark chocolate, and the other is a dark milk bar with the flavor of mint added. Cacao Sampaka and Cacao Market both make matcha white chocolates. The matcha powder turns the white chocolate into a beautiful green color, making these bars as beautiful as they are delicious. Marie Belle also makes a white hot chocolate powder that contains matcha, making a sweet and grassy drink with so many health benefits.

If you haven’t tried matcha and you like green tea, I highly recommend giving it a chance! Its flavor can be a little strong on its own, so trying it through another medium like chocolate is a great way to get a taste of it without being overwhelmed. It has so many health benefits; it can’t hurt to give it a try!
