Local Spotlight: McCrea’s Candies

McCrea’s Candies was created in 2009 after owner Jason McCrea was laid off from his job and to set out on a quest to make the world’s best caramels. Located just south of Boston in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, this small business has grown drastically in the last few years. McCrea’s caramels are made in small batches with four types of American-grown sugar cane and dairy from Massachusetts. They come in 11 different flavors, all of which are produced by a computer-driven batch cooker that ensures that each batch of caramels is consistently delicious. Their different flavors are: Single Malt Scotch, Topped Maple, Deep Chocolate, Ginger Fusion, Black Lava Sea Salt, Cape Cod Sea Salt, Classic Vanilla, Dark Roasted Mocha, Café Noir, Cinnamon Clove, Rosemary Truffle Sea Salt. They also offer special seasonal flavors, like Basil Cayenne and Curried Butternut. They do a great job of offering classic flavors with a twist, like the Hawaiian black lava salt and the Cape Cod Sea Salt, in addition to great flavor combinations like rosemary and truffle. Since redesigning their packaging, business for McCrea’s has grown by over 100%. They wanted to redesign the packaging to look more like a gift, and it clearly worked out in their favor. Originally sold only locally and on the east coast, McCrea’s has expanded out west and their caramels can be found at high-end stores like Barneys.
